In order to answer that question, you need to understand what the working conditions are like for a nurse. Most nurses work in health care centers such as hospitals, medical centers, or surgery centers. However, there are also home health and public nurses who visit the homes of patients as well as travel to schools and other community facilities. In order to be a nurse, you will be required to do a lot of walking and standing. If you are the type who likes to sit or is used to sitting, consider if this is a change that you will be able to handle and adapt to.

In addition to being physically able to walk and stand a considerable amount of the time on the job, you also need to be caring. If you have a genuine concern for others and honestly want to help and make others feel better, you would make a great nurse candidate. Nurses should also be strong in a couple ways. First, you may see unpleasant things and will have to stand the sight of blood and bodily fluids. If you are squeamish, a nursing career is not for you. The other way you will need to be strong is to be able to cope with stress, pressure, emergencies, and suffering. Some nurses also have hectic schedules. They may have to be on call and might work nights, weekends, and holidays. Some nurses, however, do work during normal business hours.

Is a nurse degree for you? There are other aspects to consider when you attempt to decide which program would be best for you. A nurse is the one person who receives the most direct contact with patients. You must be comfortable interacting with other people, especially sick people and strangers. If you became a nurse educator or administrator, you would, however, have little or no contact with patients.

If you love math and science, you might also consider the field of nursing. Nurses need to know pathology and all that good stuff, as well as be adept at math in order to calculate patient medications correctly. If math is not your forte but you would still like to be a nurse, do not let that hold you back from your dreams. Get extra help on math and put extra time and effort into it.
