Disadvantages of full time program
It certainly is a wonderful thing when you can walk across the platform and receive your degree in nursing or from medical school. But while you are thinking of the end result of the program, you may want to consider just what is the best way to get to that place where you receive the degree. Many only think of going on a full time basis, which is what many do. Others can only go part time. But have you ever wondered what are the disadvantages of going to nursing or medical school on a full time basis? Here are some reasons you may want to consider being a part time student.
Family If you have wanted to get married (or are already married), then you may have already thought about this one. Being a full time student certainly does not allow you to spend much time with a mate - or with a potential mate. This is especially true if you will have to work part time (or maybe even full time) while you are in school. Ideally, you want to still have the same family you had when you started school - but it takes time with them to keep relationships close and strong. This may mean that you need to look at your priorities in order to determine what is and what should be the most important thing to you at this time in your life. It is possible that by just determining what your priorities are that the question about being a full time or a part time student may instantly be made clear to you. Maturity And Life Experience By being a part time student you are given opportunities to learn from the real world some of the more important lessons in life. If you are having to work a job full time, then this is giving you invaluable experience in the workplace, as well as something that can be put on a resume. Lessons such as time management, choosing priorities and fulfilling them, finances, and other choices that you will daily decide upon, may make you the more mature and stable individual that your new career is looking for. Also, if you are able to get into some kind of management position while you are going to school - all the better since medical professionals daily make decisions that involve others. Financial Readiness Going to school, obviously, is to get prepared for a new career. But can this new career be fully enjoyed when there is a constant pressure from a massive debt hanging over your head? Being a full time medical school student may mean having to get a loan for the program, and not being able to put anything down toward paying the debt off until school is finished. By being a part time student, however, you can attend classes and pay for them as you go. This could even allow you to graduate debt-free, or nearly debt-free, and enter into that new career being able to focus with a clear head, and blue skies. Control Over Your Education And Life Full time nursing and medical students are not given much control over their education while they are going to school. Pressure from some life situations may make it more difficult to stay in school and get a passing grade. Going part time gives you the opportunity to choose the number of classes you want, and could even give you the option of laying out a semester if you have the need. Another possibility is that you could take correspondence courses in the summer to put more courses under your belt. And if you start a semester, and find the work load light, you could add a correspondence course to keep up a more desirable pace with your education. These are just a few ideas as to why you may want to think about taking a part time program of study as you pursue that nursing or medical program, but the decision is all yours.
