How to decide between full time and part time
When it comes time to make a decision about a program of education toward a degree in nursing or a medical degree, it may not be easy. Choosing between part time education or being a full time student has both its pros and cons. A number of schools may not offer the possibility of being a part-time student - especially at the graduate levels, but others may. Here are a few thoughts to consider when deciding which one may the best for you:
Financial Abilities If you have a lack of financial resources, or a family, or you need a regular income because you just bought a house, etc., then you will want to be able to continue to work while you are enrolled as a part time student. Another thought might be that you were able to land a good paying job, and you do not want to leave it because it could pay for your nursing program or medical school. This is something worth looking into and considering because it might help you to graduate with little or no bills hanging over your head. In general, attaining a medical degree will not allow you to be part time, this is a full-time commitment. Nursing degrees, on the other hand, have a wide variety of options for part time students and working adults. Family Concerns One concern, that should be weighed out heavily, is that that of a young family - or a young one on the way. Children are very important and their need for a present Mommy or Daddy is very real in their life. Children grow up so fast, and a parent cannot replace quality time with their children - they do feel the absence, and a vacuum often leaves a permanent impression on a young person. While this statement may prove to be a little strong, it should be remembered that people never regret not having worked harder - but they do regret having not spent enough time with family and friends - the real and important things in life. Full Time Advantage If you should decide to enroll as a full-time student just to get through it as quickly as possible and into the career field of your choice, there will be some advantages. In the first place, the most obvious advantage is that it will be completed sooner - and you are ready to enter into your medical career. Also, if you are not yet married, then certainly going full-time will allow you to have a greater focus on your studies. After you graduate, you can give greater attention to a relationship, as well as a new career. Personal Goals You may have created some goals for yourself that you want to hold yourself to - in the way of completing the program along with many of your classmates. Or, you may have someone that can open a career door for you if you finish in a certain period of time. Other Options A number of schools now permit students to take some classes online. While it is doubtful if any of them permit a whole program to be obtained through this means, it certainly will mean that more courses will become available online as time goes on. This could enable you to be able to keep up, or possibly handle a little heavier load by allowing you to take some additional courses at home - even if you do have a family. Or, some courses may be available in the summer.
