Tips on your resume
As part of your application for nursing school or medical school, you may be asked to provide a resume. If you are asked to provide a resume, you are being given one more opportunity to show your commitment to the health related field of your interest, and to distinguish yourself from the hundreds of other applicants. You should be sure to take full advantage of this opportunity. Here are a couple of tips to consider when putting together your resume for medical school or nursing school.
Your resume should be sure to include all relevant accomplishments, including relevant education experience, any internships you may have had, ideally in the health care arena, and any professional experience relevant to your future career in medicine or nursing. You should also include any awards or honors you have received, any publications you may have and any relevant groups you may belong to. Be sure to present your achievements in a professional manner, without being overly dramatic or solicitous. Of course your nursing or medical school resume should include your basic contact information such as full name, address, e-mail address and phone number. These items may appear elsewhere in your application but they are part of a professional resume. Additionally, an admissions officer may not want to have to hunt for this information and will appreciate having it in front of them when examining your resume. Any skills, education, experience or other qualifications directly connected to nursing, medicine or any other form of health care should be prioritized on your resume when applying to nursing or medical school. Medical and nursing schools are looking for an indication of your ability and commitment to completing a nursing or medical school program. These programs often require many years and can be very challenging, so admissions officers will be looking in your resume for qualities that indicate that you are up to this challenge. Some technical keywords that indicate your familiarity with medical practice and procedure will help set your resume apart from others, but it is also important to include some skills, education or experience outside of the health care field to indicate that you have varied interests; this will also differentiate you from other applicants. Your resume is only one of many important items that will go into a winning medical or nursing school application, but you should treat each item as a high priority and an opportunity to show your commitment to the program to which you are applying. Treat your resume as a professional document, one you would be happy to show to potential employers when you are applying to jobs after your education is completed. Of course your resume will undergo many changes before then, but the resume you apply to school with should provide a basic template for future resumes.
