Understanding your entrance exam scores

Before you take the test, it would be helpful for you to understand the nursing entrance exam. Obviously, in order to be successful as a nurse, you must be able to read well and be good with math. A composite score is the name given to your combined math and reading comprehension scores. The average composite score by associate degree nursing students in the United States is 64 percent. You can also understand the nursing entrance exam by keeping in mind the percent rank is how high or low your score is based upon 100 associate degree nursing students.

While you aim to understand the nursing entrance exam, realize that the math section starts off with very simple, basic math and then escalates to more complex algebra. Algebra is the highest level for the math section and is required for making medication calculations while being a nurse.

The reading comprehension section of the exam is composed of sentence syntax and vocabulary. The normal reading level for adults is at the 10th grade level. If you score very low on the reading comprehension section, you will have much trouble reading the nursing academic material.

For the reading section, your score will be determined based on one of three levels. Those levels are: frustration, instructional, and independent. The frustration level means that you will have a difficult time just reading your college textbooks. The instructional level means that you will be able to read the material just fine but may require the instructor to fully understand it. The independent level means full reading comprehension of the material. Usually, college professors are the ones who score at this level.

There is more to know if you wish to understand the nursing entrance exam. Your grade equivalence states the grade level you are at academically in terms of reading and math. Your reading rate is also included in your nursing exam score. The normal reading rate of an adult, which is at least the level of a 10th grader, ranges between 200 and 450 words per minute. The stress level indicates how stressed your are and how well you are at coping, based on five aspects. High stress levels can make for a difficult time through nursing school.

One part of the nursing exam evaluates learning styles. There are four main learning styles and they are: auditory learner, visual learner, social learner, and solitary learner. The auditory learner learns from hearing words spoken, while the visual learner learns from seeing words as well as charts and videos. The social learner learns while interacting with others and exchanging facts and ideas, while the solitary learner obviously learns best while reading and thinking on his or her own. It is not uncommon to have a combination learning style.
