Once you have made the commitment to become a nurse or doctor, you'll need to get into the right nursing or medical school. Part of getting into nursing or medical school is writing an application essay that will get you noticed by the school of your choice. One thing you want to include in your essay when you are applying to nursing or medical school is what kind of nursing or medicine you plan to practice once you get your degree.

Some doctors and nurses are interested in public policy matters related to health. These medical health practitioners are less hands on and more about promoting health awareness or obtaining or distributing funding for health programs. Others who are less directed towards the hands on practice of medicine are primarily interested in teaching, either at a college level or beyond, or in a lower grade setting, educating young people about the health issues that affect their lives and will continue to do so into adulthood. If you are interested in hands on care, in daily patient interaction, there are specializations you may have a passion for. Some nurses will want to work in hospitals and others with general practitioners. Some will be interested in the very challenging field of hospice care, and others in home care. Some doctors will be surgeons, internal medicine specialists, and emergency room doctors. If you are going into nursing or medical school with a focus, this is definitely something that should be mentioned on your application essay.

Discussing the specific area of nursing or medicine in which you are interested gives admissions officers some insight into who you are and how well you will fit into their program. It will tell them something about your commitment to the practice of medicine and your thoughtfulness about how you will use your medical education. These things will by no means guarantee your admission to a particular medical or nursing program, but it will certainly steer things in the right direction.

Whether or not you have an idea about specialization to discuss, you should be able to describe the source of your interest in medicine, in specific terms with an example or examples relative to your own life and experiences, rather than generalizations. Anything that will tell admissions officers why they should choose you rather than another applicant will give you a boost.

In addition, you will sometimes be given instructions in your medical school or nursing school application packet regarding what should be included in your essay. Be sure to read these instructions carefully and follow them. Try to answer any question posed for the essay completely and again, examples from your own experience will be helpful. If admissions officers feel like they really know who you are, you have a much better chance at being accepted to the school of your choice.
